Fury from the Deep - A Relic of the Old Time

Once upon a time before the internet and computers, there were things called typewriters and a wondrous television programme called Doctor Who. Love for the latter drove young fans towards the use of the former and after much clacking at the unforgiving keys, many hundreds of fanzines were born. Some were good, some were bad and some were unintentionally hilarious.

This book collects together all four original issues of one of those Doctor Who fanzines, Fury From The Deep, produced in 1979-80 by the fourteen year old Alan Hayes. It was never a classic, was definitely unintentionally hilarious, but over the space of thirty years and more, these fanzines have grown into a fascinating time capsule which afford a peek into the fan experience of a bygone age.

Also presented in this collection are candid and humorous introduction and afterword pieces by Alan Hayes and Jim Mortimore and a series of contemporary letters to the editor from Doctor Who's cast and crew.

"I'm a sucker for nostalgia; I think most Whovians' longtime love for Doctor Who is steeped in the stuff - in the way the series snared and scared and enthralled us decades (and decades!) ago, burning into our minds and hearts the way the best stuff does when you're young.

Alan Hayes' Fury From The Deep collection is a nostalgic delight for this ageing Whovian and one-time entertainment-writer-wannabe. I was knocked out by the ambitious, crudely beautiful FFTD, a Doctor Who fanzine Hayes wrote, edited, illustrated and distributed (in an era long before desktop publishing!) for a period of months in 1979-80. It's a fun trip down Doctor Who memory lane, and made me wish I'd been more industrious myself back then.

Hayes adds a humble, funny introduction; numerous letters he received from Doctor Who cast and crew; and an afterword by his longtime pal and FFTD collaborator Jim Mortimore (later a successful Doctor Who novelist and Big Finish scriptwriter).

The things we love at that age never leave us; they certainly never left Alan Hayes. Kudos to him for immortalizing in print this charming piece of his own Doctor Who history.
